Camping: Be Well-Prepared

LV.WWWA.06.04.15Camping is a great way to get outdoors and enjoy the beauty of nature. Whether you’re going on an adventure-packed excursion or a relaxing weekend get-a-way, camping under the stars is the perfect way to experience your trip.

When camping, it’s important to plan a trip that’s enjoyable and safe. You’ll need a campsite that provides necessary amenities and safety, especially if you’re camping with family members and small children. You’ll also need proper equipment and camping gear to make your trip easier, safer and more enjoyable.

Choosing a Campsite

You should first select a campsite that fits your needs. If you choose a public campsite, you can look for one that offers scenic hiking trails, nature walks or a nearby lake or stream for fishing. Most public campsites provide private parking areas, toilet facilities and cooking facilities like outdoor fireplaces or fire pits. Some campsites may even have showers and wash stations, and picnic tables. If you prefer to rough it in the wilderness, make sure you take essential camping equipment and gear.

Camping Essentials

* Tent (make sure the size sleeps enough people). A small A-frame tent will sleep two to three people. A dome tent will sleep up to five people, but it has low head room. A cabin-style tent will sleep three to six, but it’s the hardest type to set up.
* Sleeping bag with a sleeping pad, pillow and blanket
* Camping stove with fuel (if the campsite has no cooking facilities)
* Firewood or charcoal, starter fluid and matches if you want to build a fire
* Pots, pans, eating utensils
* Plates and cups
* Coffee pot
* Cooler with ice
* Food and drinks, including bottled water
* Paper towels and toilet paper
* Personal hygiene items like soap, towel, tooth brush and tooth paste
* Warm clothing (if camping in fall or winter)
* Insect repellant
* Sunscreen
* First Aid kit
* Emergency supplies

Camping Tips:

* Look for a warm, full-size sleeping bag with down or synthetic fill and a hood if you’re camping in cold weather.
* If your sleeping bag doesn’t have a hood, take a wool or fleece cap to preserve body heat.
* After cooking and eating, clean up pots and pans and put all food in a secure place to keep animals from invading the campsite.
* Make sure your campfire is completely extinguished before you go to bed.
* Make sure all campfires and embers are completely extinguished before you leave.
