Comeback of the WWW Addict!!

How are you my dear friends and readers!! I hope all is fine and great!! I am finally back from my two months vacation escapades from US…wow the longest escapades I ever had. Actually I arrived last Monday July 7, 2008..Since Germany is 9 hours advance, I quite lost some time..but it’s ok there’s nothing to worry about.

I had a very long journey from Las Vegas to Munich..I left las Vegas last Saturday July 5 at 11:55 pm boarding flight#DL 1092 with Delta Airlines and arrived at around 6:53 am Georgia time. I had a 9 hour stop-over in Atlanta, Georgia and boarded Flight#DL0130 at around 4:15 pm. I was just thankful that the plane was not so full that I occupied 2 seats and really lied down and relax while travelling. well, one advantage of being not so tall that I can just squeeze myself on the 2 seats.. I arrived in Munich Monday already. It was really a very long and tiresome trip for me especially that I travelled alone..

I would say, if “There is a departure, there is always and arrival”.. I am sad leaving Las Vegas but also happy seeing Germany again. I believed life is sometimes like that. I thought, I would be staying already in US but it is still quite difficult considering a lot of things. I would only say that sometimes in our life, we just need to make a right decision to be happy…besides not all material things can make a person happy…Your loved ones especially your family are still the most important things that could ever happened to you..I believed I made a right decision going back to Germany again which I already considered my new home.

This is just a bit update of my comeback…try to visit my other sites for more updates and photos of my adventure in USA..before I forgot, I also have a new blog about my travel and adventure in USA.. This blog entitled Adventure in carefree USA is still under construction, so please be patient and bear with me!!

Study maps cerebral cortex neural fibers

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (UPI) — A U.S.-Swiss team of scientists say they’ve created the first complete high-resolution map of the neural fibers in the human brain’s cerebral cortex.

The team said its findings identified a single network core, or hub, that might be key to the workings of both hemispheres of the brain.

Researchers from Indiana University, the University of Lausanne, Switzerland; the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne; and the Harvard Medical School say their study marks a major step in understanding the most complicated and mysterious organ in the human body.

“This is one of the first steps necessary for building large-scale computational models of the human brain to help us understand processes that are difficult to observe, such as disease states and recovery processes to injuries,” said Olaf Sporns, co-author of the study and a neuroscientist at Indiana University.

The findings are detailed in the journal PLoS Biology.

Submerged trees reduce global warming

COLUMBIA, Mo. (UPI) — U.S. scientists say they’ve discovered submerged trees have the potential to be used as carbon credits since they can store carbon for thousands of years.

University of Missouri researchers discovered trees submerged in freshwater aquatic systems store carbon for significantly longer than trees that fall in a forest.
“If a tree is submerged in water, its carbon will be stored for an average of 2,000 years,” said Associate Professor Richard Guyette, director of the university’s Tree Ring Laboratory. “If a tree falls in a forest, that number is reduced to an average of 20 years, and in firewood, the carbon is only stored for one year.”

The team studied trees in northern Missouri, an area with a high number of riparian forests — forests with natural water flowing through them. They discovered submerged oak trees as old as 14,000 years, potentially some of the oldest in the world.

“Farmers can sell the carbon they have stored in their trees through a carbon credit stock market,” Guyette said. “Companies that emit excess of carbon would be able to buy carbon credits to o offset their pollution.”

The study was published in the journal Ecosystems.

Customs on US Independence Day

Independence Day, the only holiday that celebrates the United States, is a national holiday marked by patriotic displays. Similar to other summer-themed events, Independence Day celebrations often take place outdoors. Independence Day is a federal holiday, so all non-essential federal institutions (like the postal service and federal courts) are closed on that day. Many politicians make it a point on this day to appear at a public event to praise the nation’s heritage, laws, history, society, and people.

Families often celebrate Independence Day with a picnic or barbecue, and take advantage of the day off and in some years, long weekend to gather with relatives. Decorations (e.g., streamers, balloons, and clothing) are generally colored red, white, and blue, the colors of the American flag. Parades often are in the morning, while fireworks displays occur in the evening at such places as parks, fairgrounds, or town squares.

Independence Day fireworks are often accompanied by patriotic songs such as the national anthem (“The Star-Spangled Banner”), “God Bless America”, “America the Beautiful”, “My Country, ‘Tis of Thee”, “This Land Is Your Land”, “Stars and Stripes Forever”, and, regionally, “Yankee Doodle” in northeastern states and “Dixie” in southern states. Some of the lyrics recall images of the Revolutionary War or the War of 1812.

Firework shows are held in many states, and many fireworks are sold for personal use or as an alternative to a public show. Safety concerns have led some states to ban fireworks or limit the sizes and types allowed. Illicit traffic transfers many fireworks from less restrictive states.

Major displays are held in New York on the East River, in Chicago on Lake Michigan, Boston on the Charles River, and on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. During the annual Windsor-Detroit International Freedom Festival, Detroit, Michigan, and Windsor, Ontario host one of the world’s largest fireworks displays, over the Detroit River, to celebrate both American Independence Day and Canada Day.

When the holiday falls on a Tuesday or Thursday, although nearly all corporate businesses and government functions remain open, many people take off an extra day to make for a four-day summer weekend. This is less common when the holiday falls on a Wednesday (as occurred in 2007), although business activity for the week as a whole tends to slow down as some people extend it into a week-long vacation. When the holiday falls on a Sunday, many (but not all) people have off on Monday, in lieu of the holiday. Some businesses close on Friday when the holiday falls on Saturday, although that is not as common (some close on Monday, but that is even less common), during these years many people only receive a two day weekend.
