WASHINGTON (UPI) — The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced the addition of a boxed warning for Regranex (becaplermin) because of an increased risk of cancer mortality.
The warning includes updated epidemiological data about the increased risk for diabetic patients who use three or more tubes of the topical cream that’s indicated for the treatment of leg and foot ulcers that aren’t healing.
The FDA said a retrospective study compared cancer incidence and cancer mortality among 1,622 patients exposed to Regranex with 2,809 otherwise similar patients who weren’t exposed. The results were consistent with no overall increase in cancer incidence, but there was a five-fold increased risk of cancer mortality in the group exposed to three or more tubes of Regranex.
“In announcing this label change, FDA still cautions healthcare professionals to carefully weigh the risks and benefits of treating patients with Regranex,” said Dr. Susan Walker, director of the FDA’s Division of Dermatological and Dental Products. “Regranex is not recommended for patients with known malignancies.”
Regranex is a medicine that is a recombinant form of human platelet-derived growth factor that is applied directly to diabetic foot and leg ulcers that aren’t healing.

BALTIMORE (UPI) — U.S. astronomers say they are developing plans to use the new Allen Telescope Array to search for extraterrestrial intelligence in the Milky Way Galaxy.
Johns Hopkins University Professor Richard Conn Henry is joining forces with Seth Shostak of the SETI (Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence) Institute and Steven Kilston of the Henry Foundation Inc., a Maryland think tank, to search a swath of the sky known as the ecliptic plane.
The telescope array, consisting of hundreds of small dishes, provides the capability to search for possible signals from technologically advanced civilizations in the galaxy.
“If those civilizations are out there … those that inhabit star systems that lie close to the plane of the Earth’s orbit around the sun will be the most motivated to send communications signals toward Earth,” Henry said, “because those civilizations will surely have detected our annual transit across the face of the sun, telling them Earth lies in a habitable zone, where liquid water is stable. Through spectroscopic analysis of our atmosphere, they will know Earth likely bears life.”
The researchers presented their plans last week in St. Louis during a meeting of the American Astronomical Society.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (UPI) — U.S. scientists report discovering a tiny species of bacteria that has survived for more than 120,000 years within a Greenland glacier.
Pennsylvania State University researchers say the bacteria, found at a depth of nearly two miles, are among a type of ultra-small bacteria that can pass through microbiological filters, including those used to prepare ultra-purified water for dialysis.
The scientists said the discovery and subsequent studies of the microorganism’s ability to persist in such a low-temperature, high-pressure, reduced-oxygen and nutrient-poor habitat might help reveal how life, in general, can exist in a variety of extreme environments on Earth and elsewhere.
Called Chryseobacterium greenlandensis, the species is related genetically to certain bacteria found in fish, marine mud and the roots of some plants, the scientists said, noting the organism is one of only about 10 scientifically described new species originating from polar ice and glaciers.
The discovery was presented this week in Boston during a meeting of the American Society for Microbiology.

I love to take pictures of anything that catches my camera. Everytime I download it in my PC, it is just so tiring to click it one by one. I don’t have a good slide show software so I can just view my pictures without the hassle of clicking it one by one.
