CORVALLIS, Ore. (UPI) — Scientists aboard a U.S. research ship have discovered high levels of acidified ocean water within 20 miles of the West Coast shoreline.

The international team of researchers aboard Oregon State University’s research vessel Wecoma surveying the waters of the continental shelf off the West Coast of North America said their finding raises concern for marine ecosystems from Canada to Mexico.

The scientists said they also discovered the corrosive, acidified water that’s being “upwelled” seasonally from the deeper ocean is probably 50 years old. That suggests future ocean acidification levels will increase, since atmospheric levels of carbon dioxide have increased rapidly during the past half century.

“When the upwelled water was last at the surface, it was exposed to an atmosphere with much lower CO2 levels than today’s,” said OSU Associate Professor Burke Hales. “The water that will upwell off the coast in future years already is making its undersea trek toward us, with ever-increasing levels of carbon dioxide and acidity.

“The coastal ocean acidification train has left the station,” Hales added, “and there’s not much we can do to derail it.”

Results of the study appear in the online journal Science Express.

OAK RIDGE, Tenn. (UPI) — U.S. government scientists say the next generation of combat vehicles will be equipped with titanium alloy doors to provide increased safety for soldiers.

Oak Ridge National Laboratory researchers said the doors would be made using low-cost titanium powders in a non-melt consolidation process they developed that will reduce the amount of energy required and the cost of manufacturing titanium parts from powders by up to 50 percent.

“We recently exhibited the new low-cost titanium alloy door made by ORNL for the Joint Light Tactical Vehicle, which is a next-generation combat vehicle,” said Bill Peter, an ORNL researcher. “By using a titanium alloy for the door, BAE Systems was able to reduce the weight of its vehicle yet, at the same time, decrease the threat of armor-piercing rounds.”

Instead of using conventional melt processing using titanium powders, with the new method the powders remain in their solid form during the entire procedure, Peter said. “This saves a tremendous amount of energy required for processing, greatly reduces the amount of scrap and allows for new alloys and engineered composites,” he said.

The researchers expect lightweight corrosion-resistant titanium alloys to make their way into many other products.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (UPI) — Burmese pythons are multiplying rapidly in the Everglades and moving north in Florida and south to the Keys, a University of Florida researcher says.

Frank Mazzoti said the pythons can live anywhere alligators can, which would include all of Florida and swamp areas in Georgia and Louisiana, Science Daily reported.

“People might argue the ultimate boundaries, but there’s no part of this state that you can point at and say that pythons couldn’t live here,” he said. “We really need to be addressing the spread of these pythons. They’re capable of surviving anywhere in Florida, they’re capable of incredible movement — and in a relatively short period.”

Burmese pythons are popular pets in spite of being one of the world’s largest snakes. They became established in the Everglades when owners released them as they became too big to handle, and one biologist estimates there are now 30,000 in the Everglades National Park.

Mazzotti said the snakes are difficult to eliminate because females can continue to produce young years after a mating.

Hurricane Rita was the fourth-most intense Atlantic hurricane ever recorded and the most intense tropical cyclone ever observed in the Gulf of Mexico. Rita caused $11.3 billion in damage on the U.S. Gulf Coast in September 2005.

Rita made landfall on September 24 between Texas and Louisiana, as a Category 3 hurricane before continuing on through parts of southeast Texas. The storm surge caused extensive damage along the Louisiana and extreme southeastern Texas coasts and completely destroyed some coastal communities. The storm killed seven people directly; many others died in evacuations and from indirect effects.

MAASTRICHT, Netherlands (UPI) — A Dutch-led team of scientists has announced the discovery of the first dinosaur tracks to be found on the Arabian Peninsula.

Led by Anne Schulp of the Maastricht Museum of Natural History in the Netherlands, the researchers found evidence of a large ornithopod dinosaur, as well as a herd of 11 sauropods that apparently had been walking along a Mesozoic coastal mudflat in what is now Yemen.

“No dinosaur trackways had been found in this area previously. It’s really a blank spot on the map,” said Schulp, who conducted the study with Ohio University paleontologist Nancy Stevens and Mohammed Al-Wosabi of Sana’a University in Yemen.

The finding included preserved footprints of 11 small and large sauropods traveling together at the same speed.

“It’s rare to see such a big example of a dinosaur herd,” Schulp said. “This is interesting social behavior for reptiles.”

Wosabi said the rocks in which the dinosaur tracks are preserved are some 150 million years old.

The Yemen Geological Survey implemented protective measures to preserve the trackways and to improve their accessibility to tourists, the scientists said.

The research appears in the online journal PLoS One.
