Ling Ling, Japan’s oldest giant panda, dies of heart failure

TOKYO – Japan‘s oldest giant panda, Ling Ling, a longtime star at Tokyo‘s largest zoo and a symbol of friendship with China, died Wednesday of heart failure, zookeepers said.

Ling Ling was 22 years and seven months old, equivalent to about 70 human years, the Ueno Zoo said. It said he was the fifth-oldest known male panda in the world.

Ling Ling began losing his appetite and strength last August because of his old age, and recently suffered from heart and kidney problems, zoo official Motoyasu Ida said.

Keepers and visitors mourned the panda, which was the zoo’s most popular attraction for more than 15 years. Public broadcaster NHK showed many visitors writing condolence messages, with some brushing away tears.

Ling Ling’s portrait was displayed inside his cage, along with bouquets and offerings of his favorite bamboo shoots.

An autopsy found he died of heart failure, Ida said.

Fukuji Sugimoto, chief panda keeper at the zoo, said he felt something was wrong as soon as he entered Ling Ling’s cage early Wednesday.

“He always turned around when I called ‘Ling Ling.’ This morning he didn’t. I rushed to him and touched his head, and he was already cold. That broke my heart,” Sugimoto said. “He was such a darling.”

Ling Ling died just one day after the zoo withdrew him from public view because of his worsening health.

Born at China’s Beijing Zoo in 1985, Ling Ling came to Tokyo in 1992. He had traveled to Mexico three times in recent years for unsuccessful mating.

Ling Ling was the only giant panda owned by Japan, with eight other pandas elsewhere in the country all loaned by China, according to media reports.

With Ling Ling’s loss, Ueno Zoo is without a panda for the first time since 1972, when the first panda couple arrived from China to mark the signing of bilateral peace treaty.

Ida said the zoo is currently consulting with the Foreign Ministry about obtaining another panda from China.

The regional newspaper Tokyo Shimbun reported Tuesday that Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda may ask Chinese President Hu Jintao to consider loaning a pair of pandas to Japan.

Giant pandas are one of the world’s rarest animals, with about 1,600 living in the wild in China, mostly in Sichuan and Shaanxi provinces.

Giant squid has world’s largest eyes

WELLINGTON, New Zealand – Marine scientists studying the carcass of a rare colossal squid said Wednesday they had measured its eye at about 11 inches across — bigger than a dinner plate — making it the largest animal eye on Earth.

Museum of New Zealand technician, Mark Fenwick thaw out the largest known specimen of a colossal squid, caught in the Ross Sea, in a pool of brine in Wellington, New Zealand, Wednesday, April 30, 2008. One of the squid’s two eyes, with a lens as big as an orange, was found intact as the scientists examined the creature while it was slowly defrosted at New Zealand‘s national museum, Te Papa Tongarewa. It has been preserved there since being caught in the Ross Sea off Antarctica‘s northern coast last year.

“This is the only intact eye (of a colossal squid) that’s ever been found. It’s spectacular,” said Auckland University of Technology squid specialist Kat Bolstad, one of a team of international scientists brought in to examine the creature.

“It’s the largest known eye in the animal kingdom,” Bolstad told The Associated Press.

The squid is the biggest specimen ever caught of the rare and mysterious deep-water species Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni, or colossal squid. When caught, it measured 26 feet long and weighed about 1,000 pounds, but scientists believe the species may grow as long as 46 feet.

“This is the largest eye ever recorded in history and studied,” said Swedish Professor Eric Warrant of the University of Lund, who specializes in vision in invertebrates. “It has a huge lens the size of an orange and captures an awful lot of light in the dark depths in which it hunts.”

The squids can descend to 6,500 feet and are known to be aggressive hunters.

Scientists using an endoscope to examine the stomach and other organs said later Wednesday on their blog that the squid was a female.

“We just found the ovaries — the specimen is a girl! The ovaries are full of several thousands of eggs!” the entry said.

Bolstad earlier said that females are believed to grow larger than the male.

EPA calls for Miracle-Gro pesticide recall

CHICAGO (UPI) — The U. S. Environmental Protection Agency has ordered major retailers to pull certain types of Scotts Miracle-Gro products from their shelves.

The EPA ordered Home Depot, Lowe’s, Wal-Mart, Ace, Do-It-Best, True Value, Sam’s Club, Meijer and K-Mart to stop selling and distributing “illegal, unregistered and misbranded” Miracle-Gro Shake ‘n Feed All Purpose Plant Food Plus Weed Preventer and related pesticide products immediately, the agency said Thursday.

The pesticides have an invalid EPA registration number — 62355-4 — on the package.

Federal law requires all pesticides to be submitted to EPA for review, evaluation and registration to ensure that they do not pose an unreasonable risk to human health or the environment.

The Scotts Miracle-Gro Co. said it is initiating steps to strengthen its product registration practices and procedures.

“Over the last several days, we learned that one of our former employees deliberately circumvented company policies, caused invalid product registration forms to be submitted to federal and state regulators and then hid those actions from co-workers and managers,” Jim Hagedorn, chairman and chief executive officer, said in a statement.

NASA faces long odds in shuttle schedule

WASHINGTON (UPI) — The United States’ three-ship space shuttle fleet faces “significant challenges” in its future orbiter work, the U.S. government has warned.

The Government Accountability Office told Congress that completing construction and continuing operation of the $31 billion International Space Station raised the possibility of severe cutbacks, the Houston Chronicle reported from Washington.

Cristina Chaplain of Congress’ watchdog agency told a House of Representatives aeronautics subcommittee that NASA must overcome immense odds to complete assembly of the space station on time. Eight shuttle missions are scheduled before the fleet’s retirement in 2010.
